⚠ Posca water chalk markers — works, but may leave a very faint mark over time

⚠ Whiteboard markers — mixed results, some stain. Stick to water-based markers to be safe.

Not All Magnetic Wall Decals Are the Same

All brands use the same smooth PP front.
The difference is what's inside.

The metal sheet, which serves as the middle layer, is the key component that provides the wall with magnetic strength, and its thickness is crucial. Most brands offer sheets that measure between 3.5 and 4.5mm, providing moderate magnetic strength suitable for everyday lightweight activities such as letters, shapes, and animals. This thickness is both lighter and more affordable, making it a popular choice among consumers. However, it tends to struggle with heavier 3D magnetic toys—if your child prefers to engage with Magna-Tiles or 3D magnetic cubes, this thickness may not support the weight as effectively. For enhanced magnetic play, a 5.5mm sheet is recommended; it is heavier and more expensive but offers significantly improved magnetic strength, unlocking a new realm of 3D building and tile play on the wall. 1 Uni-felt backing

Uni felt backing (white color), which is soft and provides a slight grip on somewhat rough surfaces, and is marketed as restickable, though it can still damage paint and may not adhere reliably 

on all wall types.

2 Textured 
PVC backing

Textured PVC backing (dark grey color), which offers a strong hold and less damage upon removal, but is less adaptable to rough surfaces.

3 Flat PVC backing

Flat PVC backing (black color) , the lightest and smoothest option for flat walls, though it tends to lose adhesion more quickly if repositioned multiple times and work with limited kind of wall paint type.

Which Walls Work,
and Which Don't

Not every wall is suitable — and knowing yours before you apply saves a lot of frustration.

 

Avoid these surfaces:

🚫 Specialty or anti-stain paint — repels adhesive, decal won't bond properly

🚫 Heavy texture or wallpaper — gaps prevent flat contact, weakens hold

🚫 Peeling or aged paint — adhesive pressure can lift and worsen existing damage

 

A heads up: Even on suitable walls, flat white and matte paints are more delicate — some minor marks on removal are possible. This is true of any wall-applied product, not specific to any brand.

 

Quick wall test: Take a roll of clear tape and press the rounded edge of the roll firmly against your wall. Stick a strip of tape flat onto the wall about 4 inches long. Leave it for a few hours — if the tape stays in place, your wall is good to go.

 

If your wall isn't playing nice — here's the fix:

We design every magnetic play wall with care and high-quality materials, but wall paints, textures, and finishes vary widely from home to home. If the decal isn't holding well on your wall — particularly common with certain wall types in the US — we recommend using adhesive for a secure fix.
